The Lincoln Motor Company today unveiled the MKX Concept at Auto China 2014 in Beijing. The Lincoln MKX Concept hints at a global SÚV that will become the third of four all-new Lincoln vehicles due by 2016. It is designed to capture the attention of consumers worldwide.

Vital Stats

This unveiling in Beijing marks the first time Lincoln has stepped beyond U.S. borders to reveal a concept vehicle.

Drawing design inspiration from airplanes and motorbikes, the Lincoln MKX Concept evokes feelings of power and agility, offering a glimpse of the American luxury brand's future as it enters the rapidly growing Chinese market.

Several customer research clinics were held in China and the Únited States to gather feedback on the design to ensure the final execution would satisfy and delight luxury customers around the world.

'Great emphasis was put on the proportions of this concept vehicle,' said Andrea Di Buduo, exterior design manager of the Lincoln MKX Concept. 'It's a very emotional, athletic design. Its horizontal lines and defined undercuts are gracefully integrated and very sophisticated, yet convey a powerful and dynamic presence.'

Intensive study of the Chinese luxury customer over the past few years revealed that a medium premium utility vehicle should express off-road capability and sportiness.

Based on that, the MKX Concept includes elements such as a separated front skid plate, heightened ground clearance and reinforced wheel arches. The floating aluminum body-side rocker molding is engraved with the Lincoln logo.

This execution communicates adaptability to different road conditions, combined wîth crafted execution and attention to detail.

Defined by an aerodynamic, sloping teardrop roofline, the Lincoln MKX Concept's modern silhouette lends to its sporty personality, which is highlighted by wide shoulders flanking its recessed rear windows to heighten the design. Dynamic side undercuts, a high beltline and 21-inch machined aluminum wheels further enhance the well-proportioned design.

The roof over the rear was lowered to give the vehicle a sleeker shape. Highlighted by a panoramic glass surface that lets natural light fill the cabin and integrated roof racks, the floating rear spoiler houses the center high-mounted stop light and hides the antenna.

The Lincoln MKX Concept offers a new interpretation of Lincoln's signature full-width taillamps.

'Concept vehicles are defined by every design detail,' said David Woodhouse, Lincoln design director, 'and this MKX Concept shows how Lincoln's thoughtful design philosophy continues to evolve. The Lincoln brand was built on vehicles wîth stunning design, and the MKX Concept is the latest example.'

Lincoln's aggressive signature split-wing grille accentuates the front end. The artistic interpretation of the grille features horizontal lines that continue as strips of LED accent lights below each headlamp. These strips of light glow sequentially as part of Lincoln's updated approach detection feature – one element of the Lincoln Experiences package.

Lincoln Experiences, a technology-driven suite of features introduced on the all-new 2015 Lincoln MKC small utility vehicle, is designed to create a warmer, more personal luxury car-owning experience.

Anticipating and responding to a driver's needs and preferences, Lincoln Experiences offers a warm embrace that begins as a driver approaches the vehicle and continues upon entry and vehicle start-up.

'The transformation of The Lincoln Motor Company is under way, with sales up 27 percent in the United States over the last six months, due largely to the all-new MKZ sedan, and excitement is building for the soon-to-arrive MKC,' said Jim Farley, executive vice president, global Ford marketing, sales and service and Lincoln.

'That momentum continues with MKX Concept. It demonstrates the design direction for the third all-new vehicle from Lincoln, one that will capture the true essence of the brand – warm and inviting, beautifully styled, and with the promise of engaging technologies that appeal to a younger luxury consumer in a global market.'

Lincoln will enter the Chinese market later this year when MKZ and MKC go on sale. An MKX production model would compete in the fast-growing midsize premium utility Segment there. With 245,000 sales in 2013, the Segment has grown 9,650 percent in the past five years. Premium midsize utility vehicles – which represent 17 percent of the luxury market and 45 percent of the luxury utility market in China – are projected to grow an additional 84 percent, to more than 450,000 units by 2018.*

In the United States, the Segment grew 13 percent from 2008 to 2013, to 441,000 units. That growth is expected to continue through 2018, when projections call for almost 550,000 vehicle sales. Globally, the midsize premium utility Segment accounted for 839,000 sales in 2013, and is projected to eclipse 1.2 million sales by 2018.**

1957 Lincoln Premiere

1957 Lincoln Premiere

1957 brought "Quadra-Lites" and tailfins to Lincoln. Also it brought the "pillarless" look to the four-door lineup. Except for nameplate and identidying script on the front fender, The Premiere was undistinguishable from the lower-priced Capri.

The 1957 Lincoln was an updated version of the all-new 1956 model, which itself was inspired by Ford's 1955 Futura show car.

For 1957, Lincoln sprouted blade-like rear fins and a novel Quadra-like headlamp system that featured regular lights plus smaller 'road' lights operated via a separate switch. The Quadra-Like system was Lincoln's response to several state legislatures which were threatening in 1956 to block the industry-wide adoption of quad headlamp systems.

The 1957 Lincoln Premiere featured a 368 cubic-inch, 300 horsepower V8. Standard safety features included a new padded dash, 'deep-dish' steering wheel and reinforced door latches. Safety belts were optional.

This Premiere Convertible is one of 3,675 built. It features the 'Multi-Luber' option, which allowed the driver to lubricate the front suspension at the touch of a button on the dashboard.
Original 1966 Batmobile Sets World Record

Original 1966 Batmobile Sets World Record  'Kustom Kar' Legend George Barris Parts with His Most Famous Creation After 47 Years

The Original 1966 TV series Batmobile, one of the most recognized and popular pieces of entertainment history worldwide, sold for $4,620,000 and set the world record for the highest price ever fetched for a TV/Movie car, at the 42nd annual Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. The unique vehicle was offered as part of Barrett-Jackson's spectacular Salon Collection on January 19, 2013.

Barrett-Jackson decided to announce the news only after verifying the records. The previous record was held by the Aston Martin DB5 driven by Sean Connery in 'Goldfinger,' which sold for $4,608,500 in 2010, meaning that the Batmobile sold for $11,500 more. In fact, Barrett-Jackson is currently working with the Guinness Book of World Records to add the sale to their list. 'The 1966 Batmobile is a true piece of Americana and fans around the world were curious to see what it would sell for,' said Craig Jackson, Chairman and CEO of Barrett-Jackson. 'We are so proud of the record it set, but more importantly, we couldn't be happier to help find a new home for such a significant and legendary piece of TV and movie history in front of a record crowd for a Saturday auction and the SPEED TV audience.'

At auction, the Batmobile rolled onto the stage bringing the crowd to its feet with loud applause when the car's creator, legendary customizer George Barris, stepped out. The bidding took off immediately, and as the numbers quickly rose, so did the reaction from the audience, reaching a mad rush as the bids soared into the multi-millions. Moments later, the car sold along with memorabilia from Barris' personal collection after an intense coin toss between two anxious bidders.

'The Batmobile revolutionized an entire custom industry that followed in its TV footsteps and you could tell that both Barrett-Jackson fans and Batman fans share an intense passion for this car,' said the company's President Steve Davis. 'It was an exciting sight to see such an exciting bidding war; definitely something we will remember for years to come. It was an honor for me to work directly with George, Joji, Jared and Brett Barris along with Barry Paster to consign this cultural icon.

'The original Batmobile started its life as the one and only 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, which was designed and built by legendary customizer George Barris to become the original 1966 Batmobile in the live action TV series Batman, as well as the movie adaptation, starring Adam West. Still as striking as when it first came out of the paint shop, the original Batmobile was part of Barris' personal collection since he first bought it from the Ford Motor Company for a dollar in 1965. Barrett-Jackson's Scottsdale auction marked the first time the car has ever been offered for sale to the public. The Batmobile still features a 390cid 1965 Ford Galaxy engine and a B&M Hydro Automatic transmission. Gadgets include a nose-mounted aluminum Cable Cutter Blade, Bat Ray Projector, Anti-Theft Device, Detect-a-scope, Batscope, Bat Eye Switch, Antenna Activator, Police Band Cut-In Switch, Automatic Tire Inflation Device, Remote Batcomputer, the Batphone, Emergency Bat Turn Lever, Anti-Fire Activator, Bat Smoke, Bat Photoscope, and many other Bat gadgets. If needed, the Batmobile was capable of a quick 180° 'bat-turn' thanks to two rear-mounted ten-foot Deist parachutes. In addition to being featured on various television and movie sets, the original Batmobile has been exhibited at numerous car shows and museums around the nation. The car is also exclusively featured in Christopher Nolan's Batmobile Documentary, which can be viewed as a bonus feature on The Dark Knight Rises DVD.The Batmobile becomes the second highest-selling vehicle ever at a Barrett-Jackson auction, behind Carroll Shelby's own 1966 Cobra Super Snake sold in 2007.

The Capri became a separate series for Lincoln in 1952. Styling was tasteful and subdued, especially in comparison to contemporary Cadillac. Like most cars of the era, the Capri was fairly heavy, weighing 4,635 pounds. The Capri was Lincoln's top of the line model.

The 1952 Lincolns were technologically innovative, introducing the first ball-joint front suspension of any automobile and using Ford's first new engine design in 30 years, a V-8 with overhead valves.

History:

In 1955 Ford formed a new division, Continental, to build the Continental Mark II, one of the most elite cars made in the 1950's. The new division was headed by William Clay Ford, son of Edsel and grandson of Henry Ford.

The Mark II (there never was a Mark I) carried a price of $10,400, twice that of the 1956 Lincoln and equal to that of Rolls-Royce. Much of the car was built by hand. Even though a Lincoln engine and drive train were used, the car was not a Lincoln. It is claimed that Ford lost $1,000 on every car produced.

The beautiful, hand-crafted automobiles were purchased by the rich and famous, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Loui Prima, Dwight Eisenhower, Barry Goldwater, Spike Jones, Nelson Rockefeller, Henry J. Kaiser, Howard Johnson, and the Shah of Iran.

The unprofitable Continental Division was closed in 1957 when the Ford Motor Company went public. A total of about 3,000 Continental Mark II's were built in its two-year existence.
